Tsunami struck western Java and southern Sumatra islands during the evening of 22 December caused more than 400 deaths. More than 1,000 people were injured and 11,600 people displaced. Anak Krakatau volcano is thought to have erupted underwater which may have caused an undersea landslide, triggering the killer waves. Island Anak Krakatau (Son of Krakatau) was emerged at the old Krakatu volcano location.

The magnitude-6.7 earthquake that struck Japan’s Hokkaido island on 6 September triggered landslides in the surrounding landscape. The island was primed for the landslides when heavy rains from Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to strike Japan in 25 years, soaked subsurface deposits of volcanic soil in the region, and  causing them to slide downhill. At least one person was killed in the landslides; dozens more are missing.

The death toll from the mudslides that struck Montecito in Ventura County, California climbed to 15 today, with 24 people unaccounted. The mudslides are caused by heavy rain pulling the soil material from the slopes slopes previously burned by wildfires in November and December 2017.

Heavy rain triggered landslides in Kyrgystan's Osh region, burying part of a village and killing at least 24 people, including nine children. The landslide covered the village of Ayu on Saturday and buried six houses with inhabitants inside. Many rescue workers were working to excavate the buried village.  40 families living close to the disaster zone are being evacuated and housed in tents. Since the beginning of the year, at least 25 landslides have been registered in the Osh region of the Central Asian country, killing six people.

13/02/2017Nearly 200 000 evacuated after threat of Oroville Dam collaps

Nearly 200,000 people living downstream from the tallest dam in the US were ordered to evacuate their homes after a spillway appeared to be in danger of imminent collapse. After years of drought, California is suffering a series of huge rainstorms that have rapidly raised the water level in the dam.  Water level was less than 7 feet (2 meters) from the top of the dam. To allow flood control, the dam has been undergoing controlled discharges of water through the spillway.  After such a release water, major damage was noted on the spillway, apparently caused by the failure of the concrete base and then erosion of the underlying substrate. The emergency spillway was used for the first time as the water level within the lake exceeded the inflow. Officials detected erosion developing at the edge of the the emergency spillway so the flow down the main spillway  was doubled and people downstream were evacuated. 08/02/2017Scientists discovered the largest undersea landslide in Australia

Evidence of a massive undersea landslide that took place more than 300,000 years ago has been discovered during three-dimensional mapping of the Great Barrier Reef. It was called the Gloria Knolls Slide, and scientists believe it was the largest undersea landslide in history, 32 cubic km in volume, or 30 times the size of Ayers Rocks. Large blocks, or knolls, and smaller blocks were found scattered up to a depth of 1,350 meters, more than 30 km from the main remnants of the slip known as the Gloria Knolls slide. According to the researchers, this landslide could have triggered a massive tsunami, which could have been as large as 27 meters high. However, a lot more seabed mapping and sampling is required for them to understand the real hazard of tsunamis posed by these landslides, or whether it will happen again.

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake striked northeast Japanese coast. It was centered off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of about 10 kilometers, in the same region that was devastated by a tsunami in 2011. Tsunami warnings were issued for the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures and residents were ordered to evacuate from coastal areas. Tsunami waves up to 1.4 m high were recorded in Sendai and 1 meter high at Fukushima nuclear plant. So far, no deaths nor landslide have been reported.

Landslide dam on the Hapuku River has completely blocked the river flow. It is about 150 m high and appears to be tall, narrow and, at least on the surface, comparatively fine grained. The dam could collapse rapidly due to further earthquake and/or heavy rainfall and rising pressure, spilling water and debris from a newly formed lake over or through the dam. The Civil Defense has advised people living downstream to relocate and to stay away from the riverbed.

A powerful earthquake and hundreds of strong aftershocks have rocked New Zealand. Earthquake of the 7.8 magnitude had an epicentre about 90 kilometres northeast of Christchurch in the South Island and killed at least two people, triggered number of landslides and a tsunami warning. Infrastructure suffered major damages. The major landslides have occurred in the coast and blocked State Highway One and railways and left Kaikoura itself isolated.

At least six people have been found dead after a giant landslide on a major highway in Columbia. The landslide  buried two cars, a lorry and two motorbikes and completely blocked the four lanes of the road in 200 m length with mud and rocks. A team of rescuers are searching people trapped in the mud.

Overall, Tropical Storm Earl damaged about 2,000 homes and caused 15 small rivers in Veracruz to overflow their banks.

Massive landslide in Glacier Bay National Park  sent around 150 millions of tons of debris spilling down the mountainside. It is estimated to be around six-and-half miles long. According to the Alaska Earthquake Center it happened at 8:21 a.m. Pilot Paul Swanstrom discovered this massive landslide when flying over it about two hours later.

17/05/2016Over 200 families missing after landslides and floods in Sri Lanka

Between 14 and 16 May 2016 Sri Lanka was hit by a severe tropical storm that caused widespread flooding and landslides in 22 districts of the country. At least 104 people are known to have died following this disaster; 99 people are still missing, the majority due to a massive landslide in Aranayake, Kegalle District. The landslide buried homes of 220 families and devastated three villages: Siripura, Pallebage and Elagipitya. As a result of the floods and landslides, 623 houses have been completely destroyed and 4,414 homes have been damaged. Many affected locations remain underwater and others too dangerous to access due to the possibility of further landslides, and it is likely that the number of victims and destroyed homes will rise once further assessments have been completed.

Persistent heavy rainfall triggered an rockfall that strucked a primary school in Liuliao Village of Fushi Township in Southern China. At the time school contained 149 pupils and 12 teachers, of whom 23 people were injured, seven of them seriously. Giant boulders crashed into the walls of the school's classrooms and fortunately many missed the school.

The Kumamoto earthquake (Mj 7.3) on April 16, 2016, and the associated aftershocks,triggered numerous landslides in and around Kumomoto Prefecture in Kyushu island, southwestern Japan. The number of deaths is 49, of which at least 10 are related to landslides. The largest landslide occurred in Minami-Aso causing collapse of the Aso Ohashi bridge into the Kurokawa river and completely covering a highway at the bottom. Other landslides caused houses to be swamped by mud and significant damage to infrastructure.

An enormous landslide hits an industrial park in Shenzhen, China with dozens of building buried and more than 90 people missing. The landslide happened when a landfill of construction waste collapsed. Mud up to ten meters thick covered an area greater than ten hectares. More than 1,500 emergency rescuers were involved in the search for people trapped under the mud. It was an industrial accident due to human negligence rather than a natural disaster.

In the town of Kullu Manali in India a big part of cliff  fall on the highway. It was thought that the rock fall fueled by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale in Tajikistan, which has caused tremors in northern India, but later it was confirmed that these two events are not mutually connected. The whole situation has recorded one of the tourists with his mobile device. Luckily, no one was injured.
